A Tale of Two Nations: Featuring Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante and Nation Beat |
|
Tuesday, 07 May 2013 18:35 |
I'm so happy to announce this historic tour that is taking place in the USA this August, 2013! "A Tale of Two Nations" will join my band Nation Beat together with Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante from Recife, Brazil. Estrela Brilhante is a traditional maracatu group from Brazil founded in 1906. They are one of the most famous traditional maracatu groups in Brazil. They are featured on Nation Beat's 1st CD "Maracatuniversal" (2005). I became a member of Estrela Brilhante while I was living in Recife, Brazil in 2002. Becoming a member of EB was part of the musical path that led me to the formation of Nation Beat - a band that mixes the traditional maracatu rhythms with New Orleans funk and Mardi Gras Indian rhythms. They are also highly featured in my book "Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion". The tour will begin at Lincoln Center in NYC and we will travel to Connecticut, Miami, New Mexico and LA. See my calendar for full tour dates and workshops with Estrela Brilhante. This is the first time ever that a traditional maracatu group from Brazil will tour in the USA! Stay tuned on my website to get updates on the tour and don't forget to click on the radio icon at the top of my site to listen to some tracks from Nation Beat's CD featuring Estrela Brilhante. |

Global Artist in Residence - Northern Arizona State University |

I'm really psyched to have been chosen to be the "Global Artist in Residence" at Northern Arizona University. I get to spend an entire week with the students working with the World Music Ensemble and the Percussion Department. I'm looking forward to spending time with all of the students where I;ll conduct a couple of drum set clinics and also conduct the world music ensemble. I'll be teaching maracatu on percussion and drumset and we'll get into the RRLR-RLRL sticking pattern and discuss it's paralells in Maracatu and Mardi Gras Indian New Orleans rhythms. I'll also be teaching the World Music Ensemble some Nation Beat repetoire. The band flys in and we have a big concert on February 25th which will feature the students on a song or two! I am honored to announce that Nation Beat was selected to be on this tribute CD celebrating Luiz Gonzaga's 100 year bday. It's an honor to be on this cd together with Dominguinhos, Elba Ramalho, Chico Cesar and many more.
Our version of Madame Baião was performed by Mike Loren LaValle on bass, Liliana Araújo on vocals, Mark Marshall on guitar, Dennis Lichtman on fiddle and clarinet and myself on drums and percussion. The track was recorded at my studio in Brooklyn and produced by Mike Lavalle and I co-produced it.
You can download our version of Madame Baião here as well as get the entire 3 CD set compilation.
