Nation Beat goes to Hawaii! |
I'm very excited to announce that I am going to Honolulu in March with Nation Beat to play some Mardi Gras/Carnival parties. I've never been to Hawaii but have always dreamed of surfing there ever since I was a kid...(I grew up surfing my entire life in Florida.) So besides playing some really fun gigs and parties... I definitely plan on getting some surf time in. If you know of anyone who might be interested in a drum set, pandeiro or maracatu class please put them in touch with me.

Forró Brass Band featured on WNYC |
|
I'm really excited about dedicating more time to this project in 2011. We've been playing some gigs on and off for the past 2 years and now I'm finally ready to dedicate some time and develop this group. Check out what WNYC wrote about us on their site:
"Drummer Scott Kettner made his biggest mark on the music scene as the leader of Nation Beat, the Brooklyn-based band that combines music from the Louisiana swamps with maracatú, the little-known rhythm from Recife, a city in Brazil’s music-rich northeast. His Forró Brass Band takes the same "north" meets "south" concept and applies it to forró, a popular Brazilian dance sound. True to its name, the band is all brass and drums, and on “Crown Heights Boogie,” that Louisiana second-line sound blends seamlessly with a Brazil-ified backbeat."

Beginning-Intermediate Pandeiro Classes in January |
|
Beginner and Intermediate Pandeiro Classes Every Monday in January with Scott Kettner.
Beginner Class: Every Monday in January | 6:30pm-7:45pm | $20 per class or $90 for all 5 classes payment in advance | 6 people max | no drop-ins after 1st class.
This class will explore basic pandeiro technique to help you develop the left wrist and control over the jingles and a good sound on the instrument. This technique will enable you to develop endurance and control over your pandeiro groove. We will also explore rhythms such as Coco, Baião and Maracatu for the pandeiro. This class is open to anyone who is just beginning to play the instrument. Handouts will be provided. Practicing on a daily basis is absolutely necessary.
Intermediate Pandeiro Class: Every Monday in January | 8:00pm-9:30pm$20 per class or $90 for all 5 classes payment in advance | 6 people max | no drop-ins after 1st class
The intermediate pandeiro class is for people who already have a basic understanding of pandeiro technique and grooves and want to bring their playing to the next level. These classes will focus on playing grooves and rhythms, not just from Brazil but also from New Orleans. Frevo, Baião, Coco, Maracatu, Funk and more. We will approach the pandeiro as if it were a drum set and learn iconic drum grooves from drummers like Earl Palmer, Clyde Stubblefield, Smokey Johnson and more. Handouts will be provided.

Is America Part of the World? |
This will be the 3rd concert and this time I'm happy to announce that it is partly sponsored by an arts grant from the "Brooklyn Arts Council". For more info about the festival series and why/how I started it please visit the website here.
For this event I'm really happy to announce some great friends and their bands will be playing. Mike Savino, long time Nation Beat bass player, will be bringing his awesome group Tall Tall Trees. Brook Martinez and his brass band Brooklyn Qawwali Party will be bringing a killing hi-energy dance party and DJ Turmix will be spinning some killing old school and new school hits....and of course yours truly and Nation Beat will close the show. And a big shout out to my partner in crime for promoting and keeping things moving Mehmet Dede at Electric Lila. I hope to see all of you on the dance floor!
